Big Ups

Voor fans van: Cloud Nothings, Fugazi, Girl Band, IDLES

Big Ups is een van de meest spijkerharde en intense bands van de laatste vijf jaar. Ze zijn als het ware een viermans-sloopkogel vol kinetische energie en gal, met rauwe post-hardcore songs die inslaan als een honkbalknuppel tegen de borstkast. Op debuutalbum Eighteen Hours of Static zijn er echter net zoveel hooks en melodieën te bespeuren om die rumoerige razernij uit te balanceren.

Schijn bedriegt in het geval van Big Ups. Tweede plaat Before a Million Universes toont een meer reflectieve, hoopvolle kant van de band. De schurende noise herinnert ons nog steeds aan de staalwollen sneer van Steve Albini, maar de band omarmt ook verstilling en geleidelijke opbouw. De titel van het album komt uit het gedicht ‘Song of Myself’ van Walt Whitman, waarin de auteur adviseert om “je ziel koel en samengesteld te laten zijn voor een miljoen universums.”

Big Ups are one of the most studious and intense bands of the last five years. They are, as it were, a four-man wrecking crew full of kinetic energy and bile, with unhinged post-hardcore songs that strike like a mallet against the chest. On debut album Eighteen Hours of Static, however, there are just as many hooks and melodies to be found to counterbalance all that deranged frenzy.

In the case of Big Ups, appearances are often deceiving. Second LP Before a Million Universes shows a more reflective, hopeful side of the band. The abrasive noise still reminds us of Steve Albini’s steel wollen sneer, but Big Ups also embrace quietness and gradual build-ups. The title of the album comes from the poem ‘Song of Myself’ by Walt Whitman, in which the author advises to “let your soul stand cool and composed for a million universes.”
