De Britse indierockband Revere heeft de afgelopen paar jaar een bijzondere band opgebouwd met Rotterdam. Niet voor niets hebben Stephen Ellis en kornuiten hun laatste EP Man Of Atom uitgebracht bij het Rotterdamse label Final 500. Op afsluitende tranentrekker Sonder weerklinkt Ellis’ doorleefde stem: “As the echo starts signing out/we all turn our backs on the crowd/ a signal to close our connections down”. Volgens Ellis mediteert het liedje op Revere’s obsessie met abrupte eindes en gevoelens van hulpeloosheid.

Een abrupt einde, dat staat helaas – maar passend genoeg – ook in de kaarten geschreven voor Revere zelf. Na 15 jaar valt het doek voor de band. Dat gebeurt gelukkig niet zonder nog één spectaculaire afscheidsshow in de V11. Revere staat alom bekend als een band die de dynamiek tot uitersten oprekt, waarbij barokke bombast en verstillende melancholiek beiden gelden. Tranen zullen vloeien en vuisten zullen naar de hemel reiken. De band geeft vanavond ongetwijfeld een memorabele bloemlezing, van het debuut Hey! Selim naar verbluffende opvolger My Mirror/Target tot aan zwanenzang Man Of Atom. Revere doet haar naam nog één keer eer aan, en dus verzamelen wij om die eer voor het laatst te bewijzen.

British indie melodists Revere have formed a special bond with Rotterdam over the years. There’s a good reason Stephen Ellis and his friends have opted to release their impressive EP Man Of Atom on Rotterdam-based label Final 500. The poignant closing cut Sonder finds Ellis singing with utmost fragility: “As the echo starts signing out/we all turn our backs on the crowd/ a signal to close our connections down”. According to the charismatic Revere-frontman, the song meditates on abrupt ends and feelings of helplessness.

An abrupt ending – perhaps fittingly – is also written in the books for Revere themselves. After fifteen years, the band call it quits. Of course, they will do one more show in Rotterdam. Known as a band stretching their dynamics to their utmost limits, Revere’s baroque grandiosity and limpid melancholy create this constant tension and release. With the end of sight, Revere will undoubtedly play with some added zest, so let’s gather for this bunch to be revered one more time!
