Justin Nozuka
The last time Justin Nozuka played in Rotown, the Canadian / Japanese singer was still a “young talent on the rise”. Ten years after his debut LP Holly, Nozuka is now an adult in his late 20s. The influences of soul, folk and gospel are nevertheless emphatically present in his music, but the intentions behind his crafty songs have changed somewhat. Nozuka has maneuvered himself nimbly on the first wave of success, now increasingly looking for the niches in his music.
Nozuka took everything for his own account on his previous album Ulysses, producing, writing and recording the bare essence of the songs by his lonesome. His music has surfaced throughout the years from unexpected corners. Like for instance Gone, an unreleased track sampled by RZA. This led to a collaboration between the two: the song became a tribute to RZA’s deceased Wu Tang comrade Ol ‘Dirty Bastard. Nozuka has been able to share the stage with quite a few big names, such as Stevie Wonder, Mary J. Blige and John Mayer. Three years after Ulysses, Nozuka finally returns with undoubtedly some new gems in stock.
