A good ear will faintly detect Primal Scream’s screamadelica and the Happy Mondays’s Madchester-sound ingrained in Jagwar Ma’s vivid, fluorescent brand of avant-pop. Not that these crafty Aussies intend to adhere to nostalgia. Jagwar Ma zestfully illustrated their knack for packaging familiar sonics into forward-thinking 21st century aesthetics at Dutch festivals such as Lowlands and Metropolis.

Rhythm & blues (That Loneliness), West coast pop (Come Save Me) effortlessly blend in with more electronic sounds like dub and techno. Another nifty fact: the band credit the now sadly folded Amsterdam-based techno-hotbed Trouw as an influence of their dynamic live shows. Jagwar Ma is the type of band that really embodies the contemporary pop sound. It’s no surprised fellow citizens Tame Impala handpicked them to open up during their January Euro bout.

Something tells us Jagwar Ma hasn’t forgotten about the fun they had spinning tunes during the Metropolis Afterparty at Rotown in 2014. Because they’ve opted to do an exclusive club show here at the Nieuwe Binnenweg, in-between tour dates with Kevin Parker and company no less! This time, however, they’ll rock the stage instead of operating behind the DJ booth. But if they decide to give it another go there as well, what’s to stop ‘em, right? This promises to be a gig for the ages either way!
