Zowel nostalgisch als futuristisch klinken, is dat eigenlijk wel mogelijk? Wie naar Yuko Yuko luistert, kan die vraag beantwoorden met een volmondig ‘ja’. Deze bedrijvige Dokkumers schrijven ongerijmde lo-fi popliedjes gekenmerkt door de losjes uitsmeerde eighties-galm en pakkende postpunkriffs.

Tegelijkertijd hoor je ook hedendaagse elementen als trapbeats terug. Lang verhaal kort: Yuko Yuko is een wonderbaarlijke psychedelische verfbom die het verleden en het toekomst knap met elkaar verzoent. Bovendien beklijven deze liedjes zich tot op het punt dat je ze de hele dag na neuriet.

Terwijl bandleider Elias Elgersma met ‘die andere band’ The Homesick is geselecteerd voor Noorderslag, heeft hij alweer nieuw Yuko Yuko-werk klaarliggen. Sterker nog, na een lading mixtapes en EPs komt Yuko Yuko eindelijk met een volwaardig debuutalbum: More Than A Facebook Friend. Vanavond in de V11 kunnen we veel van dat nieuwe spul verwachten, plus favorieten als Sunny Jane en Borderline natuurlijk.

Op dezelfde dag als dat Yuko Yuko in V11 speelt, brengt het Rotterdamse label Kurious Recordings debuut-EP Cultlove uit op vinyl. De zeer lovend ontvangen EP werd oorspronkelijk gelimiteerd uitgegeven op cassette. De nummers brachten direct een hype rond de band tot stand in het buitenland. Nu wordt voor het eerst de EP op vinyl uitgebracht met bonusmateriaal.

Writing a tune with both nostalgic and futuristic qualities seems like a tall order, right? Well, that assumption goes straight out of the window once you listen to Yuko Yuko’s witty brand of lo-fi pop. Somehow, the prolific Dokkum-based group reconciles smudged-out eighties pastiche with the edginess of post-punk, adding contemporary elements like trap beats to boot.

Long story short: Yuko Yuko is a delightfully outlandish sonic paint bomb, churning out tracks that put the future and the past in the same headspace. Not to mention, their songs have a way of etching themselves into the mind, to the point where you can’t stop humming them along.

After turning heads with his other project The Homesick this past year, Elgersma has written new material for Yuko Yuko at a rabid pace. This resulted in the very first full length LP he’s ever been a part of: More Than A Facebook Friend. Tonight at Light Vessel 11, Yuko Yuko will presumably be eager to blast out some of these new tunes, as well as a handful of favorites like Sunny Jane and Borderline.
