Zodra Town of Saints op het podium staat, kan zelfs een klein ongepolijst liedje zich ieder moment manifesteren tot een beladen orkestrale uitbarsting. Speelse, percussieve avontuurlijkheid en rauwe, onbeteugelde emotie staan beiden centraal in de muziek van Town of Saints. Twee jaar geleden kwam het vijftal plots op de landelijke radar terecht met Something To Fight With, een verzameling machtig mooie, geestdriftige folkpopliedjes die een schilderachtig, pastoraal gevoel uitstralen.

De band rondom Harmen Ridderbos (zang/gitaar) en Heta Salkolahti (viool/zang) genoot van een bescheiden begin met kwaliteitslabel Snowstar Records en pakt bij opvolger No Place Like This prettig door via gelegenheidskoppeling Snowstar/Caroline Benelux. Volgens Ridderbos verkent de nieuwe plaat zowel de existentiële vragen als een opsomming van “pietluttigheden” en trivialiteiten in het dagelijkse leven. Beter zielenvoer kunnen wij niet bedenken voor een koude vrijdagavond.

Once Town of Saints hits the stage, even the most raw, unvarnished ditty can unfurl into an impromptu maelstrom of sound. This is a band that brings fortitude with playful percussive plunges and wide-eyed emotional outpour. Two years ago, Town Of Saints grabbed the limelight with their astonishing debut LP Something To Fight With, a collection of gorgeous, heart-tugging folk pop songs that emit a rustic charm.

Town of Saints’ genesis began with renowned Dutch indie label Snowstar Records, but now the band formed by Harmen Ridderbos and Heta Salkolahti is swiftly building up steam with follow-up No Place Like This behind the cluster of Snowstar and Caroline Benelux. According to Ridderbos, the record meditates on both existential themes and the sequence of trivialities with heedless abandon. That’s the kind of soul food we’d like to appreciate more often on a cold February evening.
