Bon Iver, Son Lux, Asgeir, Owen Pallett, Efterklang

We werden in 2013 geïntroduceerd door de surrealistische popliedjes van Søren Juul, toen hij onder de artiestennaam Indians het waanzinnig fraaie Somewhere Else uitbracht via Beggars/4AD. Om de lofzang van Pitchfork eventjes vrij te vertalen: “Hij schept een wereld waarin de grenzen tussen folk, pianoballads, arena rock en postrock vervagen, resulterend in persoonlijke muziek die niet te classificeren is.”

De jonge Deen is de afgelopen twee jaar een behoorlijk bezig bijtje geweest: hij verruilde Kopenhagen voor New York en Portland en schreef daar o.a. composities voor de soundtrack van de verfilming van John Green’s beroemde boek The Fault In Our Stars. Kortom, genoeg ervaringen en prikkels om het net iets anders aan te pakken. Søren trok zich terug in een klein Deens kustplaatsje om zijn futuristisch klinkende blauwdruk te voorzien van meer bombast en pophooks. Het resultaat is het eerste album onder zijn eigen naam: This Moment.

De eerste single die uit deze sessies is ontstaan is het breekbare Ambitions, een liedje over heimwee tijdens Sørens artistieke trektocht door het buitenland. Muziek die zowel modernistisch als nostalgisch klinkt, oftewel de perfecte 21 eeuwse popsound “My mind is made up all the time”, zingt Juul vol smacht. Twijfel zelf dus ook niet zijn show in V11 bij te wonen!

We were first introduced to Søren Juul surrealistic pop via Somewhere Else a brooding masterpiece he released under the name Indians. It was lionized by many outlets, including Pitchfork, describing the album as “a world where boundaries between folk, piano balladry, arena rock and post-rock dissolve, resulting in something both unclassifiable and wholly his.”

The young Danish composer has been preoccupied with many things in the process. He traded in Copenhagen for New York and Portland, where he produced music for the soundtrack of the movie adaptation for John Green’s famous novel The Fault In Our Stars. Over time, Søren Juul amassed plenty of new experiences to tweak his perspective. He once again returned to Denmark, recording in a small coastal town with a new penchant for seismic pop hooks and grand orchestration. The result is the first album released under Juul’s own name: This Moment.

The first single spawned from these sessions is the fragile, wistful Ambitions, a song that tackles homesickness and isolation. The music that takes an ambivalent space between nostalgia and modernism, almost becoming an entire pocket universe in itself. “My mind is made up”, a plaintive Juul sings. No reason to put the pending brilliance of this show in de quandary, right?
