Soft Kill

Support: Slow Crush & Many Rooms

We gleam in silent satisfaction: the perfect balance in this divine universe may not be possible, but most certainly with this double bill. Which two bands complement each other – even down to the name – better than Slow Crush and Soft Kill? If two new exciting bands called Slow Kill and Soft Crush surface in the near future, then this double bill will be the reason. Tonight it’s a matter of life and death!

The dark post-punk and new wave of Soft Kill from Portland is indebted to everything melancholic in the 1980s. The atmospheric chorus guitars of The Cure, the creeping rhythms of Joy Division, the piercing synths of New Order, the acidic vocals of Bauhaus. Exactly the kind of music where frontman Tobias Grave can find catharsis. The musician has had to overcome quite a few obstacles: his drug addiction, prison, and a deep-rooted depression. Soft Kill has become the formidable outlet for all its fears, pain and stress.

While Soft Kill has a way of eliminating personal demons, Belgian outfit Slow Crush probably creates billions of micro-universes with their cosmic shoegaze. You have bands that give their own spin to the genre, but Slow Crush vows to become the new evolutionary kick. The walls of sound this company discharges are truly of Biblical proportions. Music that you shouldn’t as much listen to, but rather feel throughout your entire nerve system. They were already monumental during the inaugural Left Of The Dial, and now they’ll vibrate the posters off the walls at Rotown.

Many Rooms is the lo-fi folk and post-rock hybrid founded by Houston-based musician Brianna Hunt. A deep existential ache and the desire to find relief is at the heart of debut full length, There Is A Presence Here, a stunningly bare-bones album that finds Hunt reckoning with detachment from herself, her faith, and the people around her. There Is A Presence Here is built from harrowing times, but it is not without light. Goosebump-inducing stuff.
