Aan bezieling is er bij Prince Daddy & The Hyena nooit tekort. De punkanthems van de band uit Albany vangen de kracht en energie van het collectief boven het individu. Dat gezegd hebbende: tweede plaat Cosmic Thrill Seekers komt compleet uit de koker van frontman Kory Gregory. Het is een ambiteuze plaat geworden met drie hoofdstukken, waarbij Gregory inspiratie haalt uit The Wizard Of Oz om zijn strubbelingen met mentale gezondheid uit te drukken. In de handen van de meeste bands klinkt zoiets misschien pretentieus, maar Prince Daddy & The Hyenas brengt het louter met onbeteugelde levensvreugde en eerlijkheid.

Oso Oso is het project van muzikant Jade Lilitri. Lilitri deed wat zoveel getalenteerde muzikanten tegenwoordig doen om gehoord te worden: in één keer je plaat op Bandcamp plempen voor de wereld om te verslinden, gratis en voor niets. Debuut the yunahon mixtape – een verzameling punksongs met gruizige slaapkameresthetiek – kwam hierdoor op de radar van het label Triple Crown, en zo geschiedde. Met nu ook het tweede album Real Stories Of People Who Kind Of Look Like Monsters als wapenfeit is Oso Oso’s status als gevestigde naam zo goed als verzegeld. Pitchfork prijst Lilitri aan als een songwriter die zowel student als fan is van zijn grootste inspiratiebronnen, en daardoor precies de juiste snaar weet te raken.

Cosmic Thrill Seekers, the new record from Albany punk rock band Prince Daddy & the Hyena, is many things. It is an odyssey of epic, The Monitor-esque proportions, a great, galloping sonic roadtrip across space and time and Albany, boomeranging around a horn of punk, pop, indie, garage rock, and orchestral, Queen-style arrangements and theatrics; it is an exploration of the fall-out after an acid trip, manic self-destruction, bottoming-out and recovering, and then slipping again; it is a candid, acute documentation of frontperson Kory Gregory’s cyclical mental health states as told through three acts and 14 songs/chapters; it is an existential presentation of eternal return theory, a victory via surrender to impermanence; and perhaps most of all, it is about Dorothy Gale and The Wizard Of Oz.

Oso Oso is the latest project of Jade Lilitri out of Long Beach, New York. After a couple of early records, the band self-released their first fully realized album The Yunahon Mixtape on Bandcamp in early 2017. Despite this low key release, the album quickly gained traction across the scene, winning over both fans and critics with it’s diverse, a recognizable knack for memorable choruses and instantly relatable lyrics. Pitchfork said ” Lilitri is as much of a student of his influences as he is a fan, understanding the exact methods that make the sound of this music hit a certain way at a certain age and linger in the years to come.” In 2018 the band was signed by Triple Crown Records, who have reissued The Yunahon Mixtape.
