Het uit Manchester afkomstige MONEY wist met het uiterst indrukwekkende debuut The Shadow Of Heaven de ene na de andere lovende recensie binnen te halen. Hoewel de muziek van MONEY esthetisch gezien in een totaal andere hoek valt dan beroemde Mancunian bands als The Smiths, The Stone Roses en Joy Division, doolt de geest van de stad ongetwijfeld rond in de spaarzame, emotioneel beladen droompop die deze band schrijft.

De hymnes van MONEY roepen beelden op van grauwe, mistige ochtenden aan de haven, de sombere avondwaken en desolate uithoeken. Jaimie Lee’s ijzingwekkende falset en poëtische teksten snijden door de ziel met griezelige precisie. Muziek zo hartverscheurend hebben we zelden gehoord, laat staan dat MONEY een onmiskenbaar geluid laat horen. Breekbaar, intrigerend, tijdloos en pijnlijk melancholisch, dit MONEY. Maar bovenal verschrikkelijk, verschrikkelijk mooi.

Manchester’s MONEY righteously achieved widespread critical acclaim with impressive debut album The Shadow Of Heaven. Stylistically speaking, MONEY’s, sparse, emotionally charged dream pop may be different from Mancunian counterparts The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Joy Division, aesthetically, the city’s monochrome ambience is just as omnipresent here.

MONEY’s mournful hymns call to mind dreary and misty mornings at the docks, forlorn funeral watches and desolate backstreets. Jaimie Lee’s emotive falsetto and elegiac wordplay pierce the soul slowly and unequivocally. We have seldomly heard music this heart-wrenching, besides the facet that MONEY’s sonics are undeniably distinctive: delicate and bare-faced, intriguing and timeless, extremely heavy hearted, but most of all, this is simply incredibly, incredibly stunning music.
