Singer-songwriter Laura Stevenson’s bloodline is interesting to say the least. For one Stevenson’s grandfather Harry Simeone helped coin Christmas carol The Little Drummer Boy. And her grandmother Margaret McCrae, she sang with swing legend Benny Goodman’s orchestra. To boot, Stevenson’s dad was a hardcore Deadhead who would regularly bring his daughter to Grateful Dead gigs.

Stevenson’s astute, tongue-in-cheek brand of indie pop in the vein of Pavement and Liz Phair definitely operates on a different pulse than the music that gripped her next of kin. Songs that wholeheartedly contemplate relationships, mental health and the family tree, albeit with deftly delivered witticisms that elicit feelings of both joy and melancholy.
