DMA's

The Stone Roses, Blur, Arctic Monkeys

Aussie trio Tommy O’Dell, Johnny Took and Matt Mason, aka DMA’s, are on the cusp of worldwide acclaim with their sublime Britpop/indie rock hybrid sound. That said, the band’s upcoming debut Hill’s End came to fruition by modest means. The lion’s share of songs found their genesis in Took’s bedroom. In slapdash fashion, he had to push his mattress against the wall to make room for instruments and recording equipment. In other words: DMA’s made an impressive leap of faith from bedroom project to full-fledged rock act. Welcome to the 21st Century peeps!

Furthermore, DMA’s aren’t exactly reinventing the wheel. Their bread and butter is a fresh, charming and individualistic overhaul of The Stone Roses, The Arctic Monkey and Nirvana. The bands grassroots beginnings gives these stylistic tropes a wholly unique entry point, and ultimately, DMA’s music never feels like a tiresome throwback because of that. O’Dell’s transition from drummer to frontman happened very impromptu: he discovered his Gallagher-like snarl simply because their was no vocalist in the band during the recording process.

That kind of unpretentious take-everything-in-stride kind of attitude rubs off on the music: DMA’s perform their songs as an untethered, carefree unit. They capture sweet nostalgia without resorting to blatant imitation, with more hit songs at their disposal than you can throw a hat at. Tonight’s stop at Rotown is sure to bring about some new cherished memories.
