De titel van Dilly Dally’s volprezen debuut Sore zegt al genoeg: mooi is het niet, maar desalniettemin onontkoombaar. De band uit Toronto omlijst onverbloemde dronken poëzie met overweldigende en slagvaardige grunge-anthems. Dilly Dally werd al in 2009 door hartsvriendinnen Katie Monks en Liz Ball opgericht, maar bij het aantrekken van Jimmy Tony (bas) en Benjamin Reinhartz (drums) vielen de puzzelstukjes pas écht op zijn plek.

Voor subtiliteit ben je bij Dilly Dally duidelijk aan het verkeerde adres. Balls overstuurde gitaaruitbarstingen en Monks’ rauwe strot trekken het kleed schelms onder de voeten weg. De pure geestdrift van de liedjes wordt nergens zwaar of vermoeiend dankzij Monks’ krankzinnige humor en de achteloosheid waarmee Ball gouden melodiëen uit haar gitaar perst. Op het podium geeft Dilly Dally stijlfiguren van Pixies, Hole en Sonic Youth eindelijk een broodnodige adrenalinestoot.

Sore, the name of Dilly Dally’s critically acclaimed album succinctly ascribes the Toronto group’s no-frills and audacious candor. Dilly Dally funnels their frenzied, heartfelt poetry into high-octane grunge anthems. Formed back in 2009 by best friends Katie Monks and Liz Ball, Dilly Dally weathered various line-up changes before Jimmy Tony (bas) and Benjamin Reinhartz (drums) joined in to give the band’s strident lyrical prowess that emphatic oomph.

Subtlety isn’t exactly part of Dilly Dally’s playbook. Ball’s vigorous guitar workouts and Monks’s throaty yelps pull the rug right from under you. The band’s emotional stabs never cut too deep however, opting to playfully prod the listener instead. If anything, Dilly Dally inject that much-needed adrenaline surge into the groundwork laid by alternative rock-paragons such as Pixies, Hole and Sonic Youth.
