Wát een wonderkind, de jonge Schot Daniel Docherty. Afgelopen december betoverde hij nog Festival Stille Nacht en een maand later verblufte hij opnieuw tijdens Eurosonic. Dochertys doorleefde folkpopliedjes krijgen een spannende inslag dankzij zijn virtuoze, zelf aangeleerde gitaarspel.

Het instrument heeft voor Docherty meer functies dan slechts het begeleiden van zijn prachtige zangstem, dat gezegend is met charmante Schotse tongval. Docherty gebruikt de gitaar bijvoorbeeld als percussie-instrument, maar ook om bijzondere klanken te genereren. En dat doet hij geheel akoestisch, zonder terug te vallen op effecten of loops. Waanzinnig.

Na het uitbrengen van zijn EP The Holy Fire is het hard gegaan met deze verlegen jongen, die ooit als straatmuzikant begon. Met een plekje op Down The Rabbit Hole al bemachtigd is de tijd meer dan rijp om een eigen clubtoer uit te stippelen. Docherty slaat Rotterdam gelukkig niet over: tijdens Record Store Day geeft hij een concert in V11. Breng je zakdoekjes alvast mee, want dit wordt een mooie!

High-spirited Scotsman Daniel Docherty marveled Festival Stille Nacht this past December, and a month later he put up another magnificent performance at Eurosonic. Docherty’s sophisticated folk pop paeans are embedded with one highly noteworthy quirk: his self-taught percussive approach to the guitar.

In Docherty’s hands, the guitar obtains more properties than just a soothing backdrop for his likewise soothing vocals, which he lilts with charming Glaswegian accent. Not just to create strange, propellent inflections, but to generate tones and textures you never thought could stem from an acoustic guitar. Dazzling stuff to say the least.

The reserved Docherty has taken large strides since he unveiled his first EP The Holy Fire. He mastered his chops as a busker but now earned his place at Down The Rabbit Hole festival amongst some pretty impressive names. In other words, the time is nigh to do some headline shows. On Record Store Day no less, Docherty will spellbind us at the V11’s lower deck.
