Dutch rockers Birth of Joy are on top of their game with their edgy brand of psychedelic rock, vigorously embedded with throwback sounds of The Doors, MC5 and Led Zeppelin. This band is equally adept at churning out catchy blues rock firecrackers (So It Goes) as dynamic, proggy slow-burners (Prisoner). Comparing Birth of Joy to just the rock paragons of yesteryear, however, would sell them short. The band’s experimental prowess puts them in the same company as Hawkwind, Motorpsycho and The Gestures.

Birth of Joy’s sound ultimately feels fresh and contemporary rather than archaic and nostalgic. The trio’s lashing organ discharges, jackhammered guitar riffs and pouncing drum grooves have endeared festival crowds near and far. Lowlands, Best Kept Secret, Montreux Jazz Festival, SXSW… all have felt the tremble of Birth of Joy’s all-embracing rock splendor.
