Na die geniale invalbeurt op de Metropolis Afterparty en de bezwerende show vorig jaar op Stille Nacht halen wij de Canadese baardmans al te graag terug. De duistere bluesfolk van Caplan put uit Oost-Europese en Joodse tradities en bewapent deze met zijn raspende whiskeystrot en absurde humor.

Met behulp van dertig gastmuzikanten maakte Caplan met laatste release Birds With Broken Wings zijn meest ambitieuze werk tot dusver. Caplan ontpopt zich als een manusje van alles: countryballades vol zielensmart (Belly Of The Worm), Tom Waits-achtige achterkamertjesblues (Under Control), stampende klezmer (Birds With Broken Wings) en smachtende pianoliedjes (Lover Waltz). Caplan’s vindt een prachtige balans tussen naargeestige en hartverwarmende emoties, zoals een oude ziel in een jong lichaam betaamt.
